What is an e-commerce website, its types, and popular platforms to create one?

E-commerce websites have become so common that there is no need to explain them. In simple words, it is a website that allows a customer to buy or sell goods/services online. The proper definition of an e-commerce website is also called an e-business that sells or purchases goods through electronic mediums. Data and funds are transferred from one party to another through electronic means.

You might think that it all started recently but it is not true at all.

E-commerce started in the 1960s. Unbelievable, right? At that  Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) and through this the transfer of documents between the businesses. The e-commerce website started in the 1990s and now it has become a common trend to shop or sell online.

There are various kinds of e-commerce websites and they have been mentioned below:-

Business-to-Business (B2B): This e-commerce website is used to make electronic transactions of goods and services and it is done between companies.

Business-to-Consumer (B2C): This e-commerce website is used to make electronic transactions of goods and services between businesses and customers. For example, a company selling clothes to customers online. 

Consumer-to-Consumer (C2C): This e-commerce website is used to perform an electronic transfer of goods and services between consumers which is basically done through a third party. Selling your used smartphone on eBay or Olx to another buyer.

Consumer-to-Business (C2B): This e-commerce website is used to perform electronic transactions of goods and services where somebody offers goods or services to businesses. A simple example of a C2B website is a social media influencer promoting a product in exchange for a fee. 

There are various websites available all across the Internet but some of the popular websites are Amazon, eBay, Alibaba, Walmart, and Etsy. If you want to make your e-commerce website then using the platforms to build a website would be beneficial. Popular e-commerce websites are WooCommerce & WordPress,BigCommerce,Shopify,Magento and Wix.

But before you even start your e-commerce website, you need to be sure that it is legally compliant with the data privacy rules and regulations that are suitable to your customer’s region.
